MLA Bibliographic Style--A Brief Guide

Important: The new 7th edition of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers was published in Spring 2009 and this wiki reflects many of those changes.

Your media center staff can help you login to the library's one online copy of the Handbook.
Diana Hacker offers a brief explanation of the changes in the new edition, as does this brief PDF document. MLA.changes.general.pdf.

Very important: Although MLA no longer requires a URL for Web citations, we advise that you include URLs to ensure that your reader and your teacher can easily refer back to your sources.

General Tips
Your "Works Cited" section should appear at the end of your paper and works should be arranged alphabetically by author (or title, if no author appears in the entry.) In this section you should list only works actually cited. (Your teacher may also request a list of Works Consulted for those materials you referred to but did not choose to cite.)
Other tips:

If no author is given, start the citation with the title.
Abbreviate the names of all months except May, June and July.
Indent the second line and all other lines 5 spaces (called a hanging indent)
In Word 2007 from the home page, click on the tiny arrow under the term "paragraph" to find the tool that does double spacing (spacing) and using a hanging indent (indentation).

With just over 2,400 students and about 175 faculty members, the DHS media center is an integral part the school’s program. Located in Roebuck, South Carolina, one can find one of the finest schools in the region.

South Carolina Young Adult Book Award Reading Program

Read Across Dorman

In celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, the Dorman media center will sponsor two contests during the month of March.

Contest #1 – The student who has checked out the most books from the Dorman media center this school year (Aug. 19, 2008 - March 27, 2009) will receive a $50.00 gift card.

Contest #2 – The 2nd block class who has the highest percentage of books per student checked out from the Dorman library during second semester, will receive biscuits from the media center. The books DO NOT have to be checked out during 2nd block. The highest percentage of books counted for the contest will include all books checked out by your 2nd block students during the entire school day.

LMC Policies

LMC Hours
7:30 A.M. - 4:00 P.M. Monday - Friday

Behavior
Students are expected to act responsibly and respect the rights of others while in the LMC. An atmosphere conducive to research, reading, and studying will be maintained at all times.

Circulation
Any fiction or non-fiction book in the LMC may be checked out for two week periods and may be renewed as needed unless there is a waiting list for the book. Reference books may be circulated for overnight use. Students may check out up to five books with a valid Dorman ID card. All materials checked out to a patron will become the responsibility of the patron in all circumstances; so do not check out material for other patrons.

Computers
The 40 computers located in the LMC are available to students for school assignments. All users are asked to be conservative with printing.

Fines
Fines are charged to students who return books late. Charges are accessed only for days when school is in session. The charges are $.25 per day for reference books; $.10 per day for regular two week books.

Internet
Students must follow the district Network Code of Conduct when using computers in the media center. Students will be allowed to research on the Internet in the media center before school, after school, and during lunch time under the supervision of the media specialist if computers are available. During the school day, students should use classroom computers to conduct research on the Internet.

Lunch Use
The LMC is open to students during their lunch period to work on school assignments if space is available. Students need to pick up a lunch pass prior to their lunch period either from a media center staff member or the administrator on lunch duty.

Teacher Passes
Students may come to the LMC during class time with a pink pass issued by their classroom teacher for up to twenty minutes if prior arrangments have not been made with the media center staff. Students will be required to sign in at the circulation desk and work on their assignment without talking or disturbing other students. Students on passes will be accepted on a first come basis.
